What are 5 Benefits of Swimming?

1) Swimming is a Lifelong Sport
(Need I say more?) Swimming is a sport that you can
learn no matter what your age. Maybe you dabbled in it when you were a kid, or maybe
you swam competitively, or in college. If you’ve been away for quite some time, jump in
and see how you feel. There’s always room for improvement, and if you need some
pointers, take a lesson or two to brush up on those skills.
2) Swimming is Social
(…if you want it to be): Swimming can be a lonesome sport.
Group workouts are what motivate me, and the short bursts of quality conversation
in the 10 seconds at the wall are more meaningful than you would expect. Masters
swimmers are social beings and like to spend time together outside of the water too. I
have attended and hosted dinners, happy hours, pizza-making parties, and holiday
parties. If you plan a simple social event, the swimmers will come! On the flip side, you
don’t need anyone (except yourself) to get in a great workout, whenever you want.
3) All Ages Welcome
(also see #1) Swimming welcomes all ages, and I coach people in
the same workout from ages 18-85. Don’t be intimidated by the youngsters in the pool,
likewise, if you’re younger and hear the word “masters” no need to be afraid, it just
means that you are over the age of 18 and want to swim.
4) Swimming is a Year-Round Sport
Nearly all pools are heated year-round, and the
hardest part is getting in the water when it’s cold or dark outside. Have you ever seen
an empty gym pool in the middle of winter? Chances are the answer is no. If there’s
water in the pool, you should swim. Bottom line: Just swim, you won’t regret it. And if
you do, let’s chat.
5) Full Body/Low Impact/Therapeutic Water makes you buoyant and automatically
relieves the pressure and impact on your joints.
Swimming naturally invites you to use muscles that you wouldn’t otherwise use. When I run too much or if my muscles are
sore from lifting, I always swim. Note: The cardio stamina hardly transfers from a land
sport to swimming, so don’t be shocked. There is an upside to all of this! I am a firm
believer in cross-training and know for a fact that incorporating a variety of activities in
your workout regimen only makes you stronger, physically and mentally.
